India Announces Construction Of 14 Schools In Earthquake-Affected Nepal Districts
India will construct 14 schools in earthquake-affected districts of Nepal.
India has pledged financial assistance of Nepali Rupees 560.2 million for the construction of 14 earthquake-resilient schools across eight districts of Nepal, reaffirming its continued commitment to post-disaster reconstruction and educational development in the Himalayan nation. The project will be implemented through Nepal’s Central Level Project Implementation Unit–Education under the Ministry of Education and Sports. According to an official statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, agreements have already been signed to begin construction work under the Government of India’s grant assistance programme.
The initiative is part of ongoing bilateral cooperation focused on rebuilding infrastructure damaged by natural disasters. The 14 schools will be constructed in districts that were among the worst affected by earthquakes over the past decade. These include Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchowk, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchok. These areas experienced extensive destruction during the devastating 2015 earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people and left large parts of the country’s educational infrastructure in ruins.
Under the project framework, the schools will be built according to Nepal’s earthquake-resilient reconstruction standards to ensure long-term safety and sustainability. Each facility will include academic blocks, classrooms equipped with furniture, and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls. The design aims to improve both safety standards and access to quality education in regions that remain vulnerable to seismic activity. Officials said the initiative is intended not only to restore damaged infrastructure but also to strengthen the long-term resilience of the education system in high-risk zones.

By focusing on safer construction practices, the project seeks to reduce the risk of future disruption to schooling in the event of natural disasters. This latest commitment builds on a series of similar reconstruction efforts undertaken by India in Nepal over the past several years. In January 2024, India completed and handed over 70 schools across eight districts as well as the Tribhuvan University Central Library in Kathmandu, also funded under post-earthquake reconstruction assistance. These projects have been part of a sustained effort to support Nepal’s recovery and development priorities.
Diplomatic observers note that education has been a central pillar of India-Nepal development cooperation, particularly in the context of disaster recovery. The latest funding announcement is expected to further strengthen institutional ties between the two countries while contributing to improved educational access in remote and vulnerable communities. The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to continue working with Nepal and its agencies on socio-economic development projects, particularly those aimed at rebuilding infrastructure in earthquake-affected regions.
Officials say such initiatives reflect a long-term partnership model focused on resilience, capacity building, and sustainable development. With construction expected to begin under Nepal’s implementation framework, the project marks another step in the broader reconstruction roadmap that has been underway since the 2015 earthquake. The focus remains on ensuring that schools in affected districts are not only rebuilt but also designed to withstand future seismic challenges, safeguarding both students and educational continuity.
