India and Kenya Hold Maiden Navy Staff Talks on Maritime Cooperation

First bilateral Navy Staff Talks aim to strengthen maritime cooperation.

India and Kenya held their maiden Navy Staff Talks in Mombasa from October 5 to 7, 2026, to strengthen bilateral naval cooperation and expand engagement on maritime security. The discussions focused on operational cooperation, training exchanges and professional interactions between the two navies. The Indian Navy announced the development on October 9, describing the talks as an important step towards deepening the maritime partnership between the two countries and promoting security in the Indian Ocean region.

The talks were co-chaired by Commodore Kartik Srimal, Commodore for Foreign Cooperation in the Indian Navy, and Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa, Deputy Commander of the Kenya Navy. Both sides discussed ways to expand existing naval engagement and improve professional cooperation. The discussions also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence ties and identifying opportunities for closer coordination in addressing emerging maritime security challenges.

Earlier in the week, an Indian delegation led by Commodore Srimal paid a courtesy visit to Major General Paul Otieno, Commander of the Kenya Navy, at the Kenya Navy Headquarters. The delegation included Captain Arjit Pandey, Defence Attaché at the Indian High Commission in Nairobi, along with other officials. The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to review areas of mutual interest and explore additional avenues for cooperation between their naval forces.

According to Kenya's Ministry of Defence, the discussions covered strengthening existing maritime partnerships, expanding professional exchanges and improving the ability of both navies to respond to evolving security concerns. Major General Otieno emphasised the importance of sustained engagement in developing professional relationships and sharing operational experience. Such interactions can help improve mutual understanding and strengthen the institutional relationship between the two naval forces.

India and Kenya share longstanding maritime interests in the Indian Ocean, an important route for international trade, shipping and regional connectivity. Cooperation between the two countries is therefore relevant to maintaining a secure and stable maritime environment. Regular naval engagements also provide opportunities to exchange knowledge, develop personnel capabilities and improve coordination in responding to threats affecting shared sea routes.

The maiden Navy Staff Talks build on broader defence cooperation between India and Kenya. In February 2026, the two countries agreed to expand military engagement, training opportunities and maritime security cooperation during a meeting of their Joint Defence Cooperation Committee in Nairobi. The latest discussions provide a dedicated platform for naval dialogue, with both countries seeking to deepen professional ties and strengthen their partnership across the Indian Ocean region.
