India and Japan Work to Strengthen Special Strategic and Global Partnership
India and Japan deepen ties through strategic and parliamentary cooperation.
India’s Ambassador to Japan, Nagma Mallick, met with Japanese Member of Parliament and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Executive Acting Secretary General Koichi Hagiuda on Monday in Tokyo to discuss deepening the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations. The discussion emphasized enhancing collaboration through parliamentary exchanges and other bilateral mechanisms, according to a post by the Indian Embassy in Japan on X.
The meeting reflects the long-standing trajectory of India-Japan relations. The partnership was first elevated to a “Global Partnership” in 2000, upgraded to a “Strategic and Global Partnership” in 2006, and further strengthened to a “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” in 2014. Over the years, defence and security cooperation has become a central pillar, with both countries increasingly aligned on matters of peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Recent high-level interactions highlight the growing momentum in bilateral engagement. In March, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Sadamasa Oue, Special Advisor to Japan’s Prime Minister, to discuss enhancing defence technology cooperation and economic security. “They had a productive exchange of views on strengthening the defence technology and economic security pillars of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X.

In addition, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in France last month. Both ministers emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation across strategic and economic domains, reinforcing the shared vision for a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
The partnership is further reinforced by political engagements. In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on her victory in the House of Representatives elections. PM Modi expressed confidence that under Takaichi’s leadership, India-Japan relations would continue to reach new heights, highlighting the strategic significance of the bilateral ties in promoting global peace and prosperity.
Analysts note that these sustained interactions underscore a mutual commitment to deepen defence, economic, and parliamentary collaboration. With both countries prioritizing regional security and development, the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership is poised to remain a cornerstone of their foreign policy agendas, further cementing ties that extend across strategic, economic, and cultural spheres.
