India And Australia Agree To Enhance Intelligence Sharing On Regional Security

India-Australia deepen security ties through intelligence cooperation.

India and Australia have agreed to strengthen intelligence sharing and expand cooperation against regional terrorist threats as part of their broader defence and security partnership. The two countries announced plans to increase information exchange on terrorist organisations and individuals while exploring joint efforts to counter violent extremism and emerging security challenges.

The commitment was outlined in the Australia-India Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation issued on Thursday. Both nations agreed to enhance collaboration in areas including new and emerging technologies, terror financing, protection of critical infrastructure, security of crowded public spaces, maritime threats, and online radicalisation.

The two countries also reaffirmed their shared objective of promoting global peace and security, including their commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and the long-term goal of complete, non-discriminatory, and verifiable nuclear disarmament. The declaration highlighted the importance of maintaining stability and reducing security risks in the region.

India and Australia further agreed to deepen cooperation with other Indo-Pacific partners, including through trilateral arrangements and initiatives under the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. They also announced plans to work with the United States and Japan to strengthen regional capabilities and support a free, open, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

The countries committed to expanding cooperation in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), focusing on faster and more coordinated responses during natural disasters and crises. Areas of cooperation will include information sharing, expert exchanges, joint exercises, contingency planning, and support for evacuation operations in third countries.

Reaffirming their commitment to a rules-based international order, India and Australia said the Indo-Pacific should remain peaceful, secure, and governed by respect for international law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Both nations also expressed support for regional institutions, including the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), ASEAN-led mechanisms, and the Pacific Islands Forum, as key platforms for addressing regional challenges.
