Imran Khan Held in Solitary Confinement, Sons Warn of Psychological Torture

Sons reveal extreme psychological torture in Pakistan jail.

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who led the country from 2018 to 2022, is reportedly facing severe psychological torment in prison, according to his sons Kasim Khan and Sulaiman Isa Khan. He has been detained since August 2023 on charges including corruption and terrorism, following his removal from office via a no-confidence motion. The sons revealed that they have not been able to see or speak to him for months, fearing that they may never reunite with their father due to the worsening conditions.

Kasim Khan described his father’s situation as “filthy and isolating,” claiming he has been kept in solitary confinement for over two years. He alleged that Khan is surrounded by sick inmates, has limited access to clean water, and is completely cut off from human contact. Kasim emphasized the psychological toll, stating, “The conditions are getting worse, and it’s very hard to see a way out. We are trying to have faith, but it is extremely difficult.”

Sulaiman Khan called his father’s cell a “death cell,” saying he spends almost 23 hours a day in isolation. He noted that an army spokesperson confirmed Khan’s full isolation, describing the prison conditions as substandard and in violation of international norms. Sulaiman stressed that even minimal interactions are denied, raising concerns over the long-term impact on Khan’s mental and physical well-being.

The family’s concerns echo warnings from Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, who said visits are being blocked and condemned the isolation as illegal and torturous. She urged authorities to end the mistreatment, highlighting the violation of human rights and dignity in his detention. These accounts underline growing alarm over the treatment of high-profile political prisoners in Pakistan.

International attention has also intensified. UN Special Rapporteur Alice Jill Edwards called on Pakistani authorities to ensure Khan’s detention conditions comply with global human rights standards. She warned that prolonged solitary confinement, extreme isolation, and restricted communication could amount to torture or inhumane treatment. Since his transfer to Adiala Jail in September 2023, Khan has reportedly been under constant camera surveillance and nearly complete isolation from the outside world.
