IMD Warns of Flash Floods, Landslides in Kashmir as Heavy Rain and Snow Continue
IMD warns Kashmir faces flash floods and landslides until April tenth.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for flash floods and landslides in parts of Kashmir following continued heavy rainfall and erratic weather conditions across the region. The advisory comes as both plains and higher-altitude areas experience fluctuating weather patterns, raising concerns over public safety and infrastructure in vulnerable zones.
According to the weather department, unstable weather conditions are expected to persist until April 10, with intermittent rainfall and snowfall affecting various districts. Higher reaches, including the popular tourist destination Gulmarg, along with Kupwara and Bandipora, recorded fresh snowfall on Wednesday, while plains such as Srinagar witnessed steady rainfall throughout the day.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain in most areas, with the possibility of heavy showers in isolated locations. Snowfall is also expected to continue in higher elevations until Thursday morning. The weather activity is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and gusty winds in several parts of the valley, potentially disrupting daily life and travel.

Issuing a yellow alert for the entire Kashmir region, the IMD has cautioned residents about possible weather-related hazards. Authorities warned that intense rainfall over short periods could trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas prone to water accumulation. Commuters and residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
The department further indicated that scattered light rain or thundershowers may occur on Thursday and Friday. However, a relatively dry spell is expected between April 11 and April 16, although isolated areas could still witness brief rain showers during afternoon or evening hours, suggesting that weather instability may not completely subside.
Meanwhile, recent hailstorms in southern districts such as Shopian and Kulgam have already caused significant damage to orchards and early-stage fruit crops, impacting local farmers. In response, the IMD has advised farmers to resume agricultural activities cautiously once weather conditions stabilise, even as authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation closely.
