IMD Issues Orange Alert for Kerala Wayanad; Heatwave Warnings for Delhi, Haryana and Punjab
North India battles a heatwave at 43°C as the monsoon brings heavy rain to the south and northeast.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for several northern states, including Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab, as temperatures continue to rise across parts of the country. The weather agency has cautioned residents to take necessary precautions against prolonged exposure to extreme heat, particularly during peak afternoon hours when temperatures are expected to remain significantly above normal levels.
According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are likely to persist in isolated areas of Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab over the coming days. Authorities have advised vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, to remain hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. The warning comes amid a broader spell of hot and dry weather affecting large sections of north India.
In addition to the heatwave alerts, the IMD has also issued an orange alert for Wayanad district in Kerala due to the possibility of heavy rainfall. The orange alert indicates a need for preparedness and heightened vigilance as intense rain could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to normal life in vulnerable areas.

Weather officials said the contrasting weather patterns highlight the diverse climatic conditions currently being experienced across the country. While northern states continue to face soaring temperatures and dry conditions, parts of southern India are witnessing increased rainfall activity associated with seasonal weather systems and moisture-laden winds.
Local administrations in the affected regions have been urged to remain prepared for weather-related challenges. Disaster management authorities are closely monitoring developments and have advised residents to follow official weather updates and safety guidelines. Emergency response teams are also expected to remain on standby in areas prone to flooding or heat-related health emergencies.
The latest forecasts underscore the importance of weather preparedness as India moves through a period marked by both extreme heat and heavy rainfall. The IMD has encouraged the public to stay informed through official bulletins and take appropriate precautions to minimize risks associated with adverse weather conditions in their respective regions.
