Illegal Indian Truck Driver Faces Homicide Charges After Deadly US Crash

Illegal Indian driver charged following fatal Oregon truck collision.

A 32-year-old Indian man, Rajinder Kumar, has been formally charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangering after a tragic truck collision in Deschutes County, Oregon, left two people dead. The incident occurred on the night of November 24, involving a semi-truck operated by Kumar and a car carrying William Micah Carter, 25, and Jennifer Lynn Lower, 24, both of whom were killed at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Kumar’s freightliner truck was jackknifed and blocking both lanes of travel when Carter’s vehicle collided with the trailer at highway speed. Oregon State Police identified dark conditions and the absence of active emergency warning equipment as primary contributing factors in the deadly accident. The highway remained closed for approximately seven hours during on-scene investigations.

Kumar, who entered the United States illegally three years ago, was arrested and lodged in the Deschutes County Jail. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer for him, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny of illegal immigration and its intersection with highway safety concerns.

Officials emphasized that this is the fourth fatal highway crash in recent months involving Indian nationals who entered the US illegally while driving commercial trucks. Previous cases in Florida and California involved multiple fatalities and severe injuries, drawing renewed attention to regulatory oversight of commercial driver licensing and immigration enforcement.

The incident has reignited debate over public safety and policy enforcement. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin of DHS described the crash as part of a troubling pattern, questioning the continued issuance of commercial driver licenses to individuals who entered the country illegally and stressing the urgent need for stricter safeguards to prevent similar tragedies on American highways.
