IIMs to Announce CAT 2026 Notification, Selection Criteria Vary Across Institutes

IIMs expected to release CAT 2026 notification, starting MBA admission cycle soon.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are expected to release the official notification for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026 soon, marking the beginning of the admission process for Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes across the country. The CAT examination serves as the primary entrance test for admissions to all IIMs and is also accepted by several leading business schools in India. Last year, the CAT notification was issued in July, and candidates are anticipating a similar timeline for the 2026 admission cycle.

The CAT score remains one of the most significant factors in the IIM admission process. However, securing a high score alone does not guarantee admission, as each IIM follows its own independent shortlisting criteria for the subsequent selection stages. The list of shortlisted candidates will be published separately on the official websites of the respective IIMs, while interview call letters will be sent directly to eligible applicants by individual institutes.

According to the official admission guidelines, shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in multiple evaluation stages, including the Writing Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI). While the exact process differs from one institute to another, these assessment rounds are designed to evaluate candidates on communication skills, analytical ability, leadership potential, and overall suitability for management education beyond their performance in the entrance examination.

Apart from CAT 2026 scores, the IIMs may also consider several additional parameters while preparing final merit lists. These include a candidate's previous academic performance, relevant work experience, academic and gender diversity, and other factors specified by individual institutes. The weight assigned to each parameter varies across campuses, allowing every IIM to design a selection process aligned with its own admission policy and institutional objectives.

Candidates are advised to regularly monitor the official CAT website as well as the websites of their preferred IIMs for updates regarding the notification, application schedule, eligibility criteria, and admission process. Since each institute adopts its own methodology for shortlisting and final selection, aspirants should carefully review the admission policies published by individual IIMs before applying to ensure they understand the evaluation criteria and required documentation.

Most IIMs continue to conduct a combination of written assessments and personal interviews as part of their final selection process. In recent admission cycles, several institutes have primarily returned to in-person interviews, while some have also incorporated hybrid arrangements where required. With the CAT 2026 notification expected shortly, management aspirants are encouraged to begin their preparation early and stay informed about official announcements to ensure timely completion of every stage of the admission process.
