Hyderabad Bullet Train: Centre Clarifies No Formal Land Requisition Sent to States

Alignment studies continue for three proposed high-speed rail corridors from Hyderabad.

The Centre has clarified that no formal requisition for land acquisition has been sent to state governments for the proposed high-speed rail corridors connecting Hyderabad with Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune. Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy announced the clarification on October 10 after discussing the projects with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The statement comes amid concerns over land acquisition in areas surrounding Hyderabad, where farmers have raised objections to activities linked to infrastructure projects.

Kishan Reddy said the Railway Ministry had confirmed that the proposed corridors were still at the alignment-study stage. According to the minister, the routes had not been finalised, and the Centre had not asked the respective state governments to begin acquiring land for the high-speed rail projects. He also warned that any land acquisition being carried out in the name of these corridors at the current stage was illegal. The clarification aims to address uncertainty among landowners over the proposed routes and the status of acquisition proceedings.

The three proposed corridors are Hyderabad–Chennai, Hyderabad–Bengaluru and Hyderabad–Pune. They were announced as part of the Union Budget for 2026–27, which outlined plans for seven high-speed rail corridors across the country. The proposed network is intended to strengthen connectivity between major economic centres, improve intercity travel and support business activity. However, the specific alignments and land requirements for the Hyderabad-linked routes have yet to be formally communicated to the respective state governments.

The clarification comes amid reports of land-related concerns on the outskirts of Hyderabad, where acquisition efforts connected to the rail corridor and other projects have faced resistance from farmers. Uncertainty over the proposed routes has raised questions about which areas could be affected and whether landowners would be required to surrender their properties. The Centre’s statement indicates that the final route details must be established before the formal process moves forward.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated that once the alignment studies are completed and the routes are finalised, the details will be shared with the concerned state governments and farmers. This would provide greater clarity on the corridors’ proposed paths and the land potentially required for construction. Until then, officials have cautioned against undertaking land acquisition in the name of the high-speed rail projects without the necessary authorisation.

The proposed corridors form part of a broader effort to improve rail connectivity between major Indian cities. Their implementation will require coordination between the Centre and state governments, along with decisions on route planning, land requirements and supporting infrastructure. For now, the immediate priority remains completing the alignment studies and communicating the finalised plans to affected stakeholders. The latest clarification establishes that the formal land acquisition process for the three Hyderabad-linked corridors has not yet been initiated by the Centre.
