US House Passes 215-208 Resolution To Limit Trump’s Iran War Powers

US House narrowly passes resolution restricting Trump’s Iran military authority.

The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military operations against Iran. The measure passed with a narrow 215–208 vote, marking a rare political setback for the president and exposing divisions within the Republican Party. Four Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the resolution, making it the first successful House passage of such a measure after multiple failed attempts.

The vote sparked immediate reactions on Capitol Hill, with lawmakers describing the outcome as a significant assertion of congressional authority over war powers. Supporters of the resolution argued that the ongoing military campaign has imposed economic pressure on American households, particularly through rising fuel and consumer prices. Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, a leading Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the conflict has caused widespread public hardship and urged the administration to reconsider its approach to the war.

The resolution comes in the context of a prolonged and escalating confrontation between the United States and Iran, which intensified after joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in February. The conflict has reportedly disrupted global energy markets and contributed to instability in key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and gas supplies. Iran has periodically disrupted maritime traffic in the region, further heightening tensions and global economic concerns.

Although a ceasefire was announced in April, the situation has remained fragile, with intermittent exchanges of military strikes and continued diplomatic uncertainty. The broader regional conflict has also been complicated by parallel tensions involving Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Lawmakers opposing the resolution warned that limiting presidential authority could weaken ongoing negotiations and reduce the United States’ flexibility in responding to rapidly evolving security threats.

House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously attempted to delay the vote, but ultimately allowed it to proceed after discussions with the White House. Reports indicate that President Trump remains focused on securing strategic objectives in the region, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The resolution now moves to the Senate, where a similar proposal has already gained limited bipartisan support, although its final passage remains uncertain given expected opposition from the administration.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the measure, arguing that it could undermine sensitive diplomatic efforts with Tehran at a critical stage. While the House vote represents a symbolic challenge to executive authority, the ultimate outcome will depend on Senate deliberations and the president’s response, with Trump widely expected to reject any congressional attempt to limit his wartime powers.
