Hindu Temple Vandalized in Indiana Hate Crime

The BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood, Indiana, was targeted in a disturbing act of vandalism, with its main signboard defaced, prompting strong condemnation from the Indian Consulate in Chicago. Describing the incident as “reprehensible,” the consulate has urged local law enforcement to take swift action against the perpetrators. The attack, reported on Tuesday via the temple’s official public affairs X account, marks the fourth time in less than a year that a BAPS temple in the U.S. has been vandalized.
The Indian Consulate in Chicago issued a statement on X, saying, “Desecration of the main signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood, Indiana, is reprehensible.” The consul general addressed devotees, local leaders, and Greenwood’s mayor, calling for unity and vigilance against such acts of religious intolerance. “We stand together to reject hate and division,” the consulate emphasized. It has formally raised the issue with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.
The temple administration responded with resilience, stating, “This act has strengthened our community’s resolve, and we remain united against anti-religious behavior.” The incident follows a similar attack in March 2025, when a BAPS temple in California was defaced, raising concerns about a pattern of targeted vandalism against Hindu places of worship in the U.S.
