Himanta Biswa Sarma Resigns as Assam Chief Minister, Oath May 12
Himanta Sarma resigns, Assam government oath ceremony set May 12
Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday submitted his resignation as Chief Minister of Assam to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya following the BJP-led NDA’s decisive victory in the Assembly elections. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested Sarma and his council of ministers to continue in a caretaker capacity until the new government is formally constituted.
The resignation is part of the standard constitutional process after an election mandate, even when the incumbent alliance returns to power. According to sources, central observers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are expected to arrive in the state later this week to oversee the selection of the legislature party leader, who will be sworn in as the next Chief Minister.
Senior BJP leaders J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini have been appointed as central observers for the process. The newly elected MLAs will meet to elect their leader, after which the BJP-led NDA will formally stake claim to form the government.

Sources within the party indicate that Sarma is likely to continue as Chief Minister, although an official announcement will follow the legislature party meeting. The oath-taking ceremony for the new government is tentatively scheduled for May 12, with Narendra Modi expected to attend the event.
Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation, Sarma confirmed that the Governor had accepted the resignation of both him and his council of ministers. He expressed gratitude to the Governor for his guidance over the past five years and assured full cooperation during the transition period.
Sarma also noted that no date has yet been finalised for the BJP legislature party meeting, urging patience as the process unfolds. The formation of the new government will proceed once the party formally elects its leader, marking the beginning of the NDA’s next term in Assam.
