Hezbollah Accepts US-Backed Ceasefire Proposal To Halt Attacks With Israel

Lebanon says US-backed proposal could ease cross-border hostilities.

Hezbollah has accepted a United States proposal for a mutual cessation of hostilities with Israel, according to a statement issued by Lebanon's embassy in Washington on Monday. The proposed arrangement is aimed at reducing tensions and would eventually be expanded to cover the entirety of Lebanese territory.

The statement, which was later shared by the Lebanese presidency on X, outlined an initial framework under which Israel would refrain from carrying out strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs. In exchange, the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement would halt its attacks against Israel. The proposal came after Israel reportedly threatened to target the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital earlier in the day.

The development represents a potentially significant step in efforts to contain hostilities between the two sides, which have engaged in repeated cross-border exchanges of fire. Beirut's southern suburbs, a stronghold of Hezbollah, have frequently been at the centre of tensions and security concerns during periods of escalation.

According to the Lebanese embassy, the proposed arrangement would begin with measures focused on the capital and later be extended to encompass all Lebanese territory. Lebanese authorities have presented the initiative as part of broader diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation and restoring stability.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah told the group's Al-Manar television channel that the organisation supports a comprehensive ceasefire across Lebanon. He said such a ceasefire should serve as a precursor to the withdrawal of Israeli troops, indicating that Hezbollah views a broader political and security settlement as necessary for lasting calm.

Fadlallah added that Hezbollah would closely monitor developments in the coming days to assess whether the cessation of hostilities takes effect and is respected by all parties. The coming days are expected to be crucial in determining whether the proposed arrangement can translate into a sustained reduction in violence and pave the way for further diplomatic progress.
