Harsimrat Kaur Apologises for Sacrilege, Turns Question Back on AAP and Congress

Harsimrat Kaur revisits sacrilege apology while questioning AAP's unfulfilled justice promises.

Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has apologised again for the sacrilege incidents that occurred during the previous SAD-BJP government while turning the issue into a political attack on the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Speaking at a political conference in Sangrur to mark the death anniversary of Akali Dal leader Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, she said the party was sorry for the incident and maintained that those responsible should be punished.

Harsimrat Kaur said the Akali Dal had vowed not to rest until the perpetrators of the sacrilege incidents were brought to justice. However, she also questioned the AAP government over what she described as hundreds of sacrilege incidents reported over the past decade. She asked what had happened to the promises made by the AAP before coming to power, including its assurance of delivering justice in such cases within four months.

The sacrilege controversy has remained a major political issue in Punjab and caused significant damage to the Akali Dal's image during its previous tenure in government. The incidents triggered widespread protests and public anger across the state, with the controversy becoming one of the factors behind the party's defeat in the 2017 Assembly elections. The Akalis subsequently struggled to regain political ground and also suffered another major setback in the 2022 elections.

Harsimrat Kaur's latest remarks indicate a shift in the Akali Dal's approach to the issue as the 2027 elections draw closer. Rather than continuing to defend the party's record during its time in power, she is attempting to broaden the debate by questioning the performance of successive governments. Her argument is that AAP and Congress should also face scrutiny over their handling of sacrilege cases and the commitments they made to voters.

The strategy also seeks to contrast the political response to the sacrilege controversy during the Akali government's tenure with the situation under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Despite continuing political controversy surrounding sacrilege cases and questions raised by the opposition, the Mann government has continued with public programmes and political activities without facing a backlash on the same scale as the Akalis experienced. Harsimrat Kaur's remarks therefore appear aimed at placing the AAP government's record directly under public scrutiny.

For the Akali Dal, the challenge is whether the renewed apology and counterattack can help transform sacrilege from a longstanding political liability into an issue on which it can challenge its rivals. The party continues to carry the political consequences of the incidents that took place during its rule, but it is now seeking to argue that accountability should extend to every government. With the 2027 Punjab elections approaching, the response of voters to that argument could determine whether the Akalis are able to regain some of the political space they have lost in recent years.
