H-1B Visa Holders Face Deadline Pressure After Meta And Amazon Layoffs

Indian H-1B visa holders face uncertainty after layoffs at Meta and Amazon.

Indian professionals on H-1B visas in the United States are facing growing uncertainty following a wave of layoffs across major technology companies such as Meta, Amazon, and Oracle, raising concerns about visa status stability amid a tightening job market and stricter immigration scrutiny.

The issue has gained urgency after Meta announced large-scale workforce reductions as part of its restructuring push toward artificial intelligence-driven operations, with reports indicating thousands of job losses. Similar workforce adjustments across other major tech firms have added to the instability, disproportionately affecting foreign workers whose legal residency in the US is directly tied to employment.

Under US immigration rules, H-1B visa holders are allowed a limited 60-day grace period after losing their job to either secure new employment with a sponsoring employer, change their visa status, or leave the country. With hiring slowing across the tech sector, many affected professionals are struggling to meet this deadline, increasing pressure on those who have recently been laid off.

Data indicates that Indian nationals form the largest share of H-1B visa holders in the United States, particularly in computer-related roles. In FY24, a significant majority of H-1B approvals were linked to Indian professionals, reflecting their dominant presence in the US technology workforce. This concentration has amplified the impact of layoffs on Indian employees, especially in companies undergoing restructuring.

In response to the uncertainty, some individuals are reportedly applying for B-2 visitor visas to legally remain in the country while searching for new employment opportunities, though approvals are subject to stricter scrutiny. Immigration authorities have also tightened checks on status-change applications, requiring stronger justification for temporary stays. As a result, affected professionals are navigating complex legal and procedural challenges as they attempt to maintain continuity of stay in the United States.
