Governor Tim Walz, Local Leaders Criticize Trump Administration After ICE Shooting in Minneapolis
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and other Democrats strongly condemned the fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis, calling out federal leadership and urging accountability.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on January 8, 2026, describing the incident as a tragic consequence of the Trump administration's "reality TV" style of governance. In a pointed statement, Walz criticized federal authorities for prioritizing fear, headlines, and conflict over responsible law enforcement, saying, "What we're seeing is the consequences of governance designed to generate fear, headlines, and conflict. It's governed by reality TV. And today, that recklessness cost someone their life." He urged federal officials to cease further intervention, declaring that Minnesota does not need "any further help from the federal government," while calling on residents to protest safely.
The shooting occurred during a targeted ICE operation amid the administration's intensified immigration enforcement efforts. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the woman allegedly "weaponized her vehicle" in an attempt to run over agents, with DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stating she "attacked" officers after their vehicles became stuck in snow. President Donald Trump defended the agent on Truth Social, describing the woman as "disorderly, obstructing, and resisting" and asserting that the officer acted in self-defense. Minnesota Republicans, including Representatives Michelle Fischbach and Tom Emmer, echoed this position, praising ICE agents for protecting communities and standing by the officer's actions as self-defense.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected the federal account outright, stating he had reviewed video evidence and calling it "bullshit." Frey described the incident as "an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying" and joined other local Democratic leaders in demanding full accountability and an immediate withdrawal of ICE operations from the city until more information emerges. The Minnesota Democratic Party posted on X urging DHS to "pull back their operation immediately until more info is available," reflecting widespread concern among state Democrats about the handling of the event.

The incident has sparked protests in Minneapolis and drawn national attention, with political commentator Keith Olbermann labeling the shooting as "murder" and calling for arrests. As investigations continue, the event has intensified debates over immigration enforcement tactics, federal-state relations, and the use of force by federal agents. Governor Walz and local officials have emphasized the need for transparency and restraint, while the administration maintains that the agent's actions were justified under the circumstances. The identity of the woman, identified in reports as Renee Nicole Good, has added further emotional weight to the growing calls for answers and reform.
