Google has agreed to a $50 million settlement in a racial discrimination lawsuit brought by Black employees who alleged systemic bias in hiring, pay, promotions, and workplace treatment at the tech giant. The lawsuit, originally filed in 2022 by former Google employee April Curley and later expanded into a class action, accused the company of maintaining a “pattern and practice” of discriminatory treatment against Black workers. Plaintiffs alleged that Black employees were disproportionately placed in lower-level and lower-paid roles and faced a hostile work environment when they raised concerns about inequality.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented the plaintiffs, described the case as one of accountability in the technology industry. In a statement, he said Black employees have long faced structural barriers that limit career advancement, adding that the settlement sends a message that discriminatory workplace practices cannot be tolerated.Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the announcement of the settlement. The company has not admitted liability as part of the agreement, which is a common feature in such legal resolutions.
The lawsuit also referenced broader allegations of workplace bias within the company, including claims that Black job candidates were evaluated through racial stereotypes and sometimes deemed “not ‘Googly’ enough,” a term described in the filing as a coded reference to race-based exclusion. Plaintiffs further alleged that interviewers undermined Black candidates and that hiring practices often steered them into roles with limited advancement opportunities.

The complaint echoed previous concerns raised by Black employees at Google, including high-profile incidents involving AI researcher Timnit Gebru, who said she was pushed out of the company following internal disputes over research on the risks of artificial intelligence systems.
As part of the settlement, Google has agreed to implement pay equity analyses, enhance pay transparency measures, and limit the use of mandatory arbitration in employment-related disputes through at least August 2026, according to the plaintiffs’ legal team. The agreement is being presented by attorneys as a step toward increasing corporate accountability, though it does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing by the company.
