Goat Named Goldie Guides Firefighters to Colorado Wildfire
Goat named Goldie guides firefighters to Colorado wildfire scene.
A goat named Goldie has earned praise after unexpectedly helping firefighters navigate steep mountain terrain while they battled a wildfire near Cheyenne Mountain State Park. The animal reportedly guided crews towards the blaze and later helped them find a safe route back down the mountain after hours of firefighting work.
The Rock Creek Canyon fire broke out early on Wednesday in an area west of the state park and quickly spread across about five acres. Officials said the blaze was sparked by a lightning strike. Firefighters hiked into the difficult terrain, dug a containment line around the affected area and received support from a helicopter that dropped water on the flames.
Shane Coyne, superintendent of the Southern Colorado Interagency Wildland Fire Team, said Goldie appeared to know the best route through the mountain terrain. The goat repeatedly moved ahead of the firefighters before stopping and bleating, apparently encouraging the crews to follow her as they made their way towards the fire.

Firefighters spent around three hours digging a fire break and using chainsaws to control the blaze. When the crews prepared to descend the mountain, Goldie appeared again near the burned area. According to Coyne, the goat looked back at the firefighters and continued bleating before leading them along a route towards her owner’s home, about three-quarters of a mile away.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department later shared a video of Goldie on Instagram and praised the animal’s unexpected leadership. The department said the determined goat guided crews towards the fire and even helped with fuel mitigation along the way. As more firefighters arrived, word of the four-legged guide quickly spread among the teams working in the area.
Crews remained at the scene on Thursday to ensure the containment line continued to hold and prevent the fire from spreading. Coyne later learned that the goat’s name was Goldie and praised the animal for her unusual role in the operation. The episode turned the goat into a local favourite as firefighters continued monitoring the wildfire area.
