Gaza Devastated by Deadly Rains: 12 Lives Lost in Flooded Camps

Torrential rains flood Gaza camps, collapse buildings, killing at least 12 including a newborn from hypothermia.

Torrential rains battered Gaza over the past week, leaving at least 12 people dead, including a two-week-old baby, and flooding camps for displaced residents. The downpour, exceeding 150 millimeters in some areas, turned dirt roads to mud and caused multiple buildings, already weakened by the ongoing conflict, to collapse.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that the infant died of hypothermia after being admitted to the hospital in critical condition. In Gaza City, a man was killed when a home damaged in previous Israeli strikes gave way during the rainfall. Five others were injured in the collapse, highlighting the fragile state of Gaza’s infrastructure.

Most residents live in tents or damaged buildings, with limited shelter options available. Emergency workers warned that many structures remain at risk of collapse, but the scarcity of safe spaces leaves families with few alternatives. Mohammed Gharableh, displaced from Rafah, said every storm forces families to scramble for safe shelter and dry bedding.

Aid groups have emphasized the urgent need for more winterized tents and shelter materials. Despite the ceasefire, supplies entering Gaza have not met the needs of the 2 million residents, many of whom remain exposed to rain and hypothermia risks. The Shelter Cluster coalition reported that only a fraction of the required tents have been delivered.

The Israeli military stated that over 270,000 tents, tarps, and winter supplies have entered Gaza in recent months, but aid organizations dispute these figures, stressing that many tents lack proper insulation for winter conditions. UN agencies continue to distribute blankets and other supplies, but the demand far exceeds availability.

As Gaza braces for ongoing winter weather, officials warn that flooding and hypothermia risks will persist. Residents and aid groups urge rapid delivery of shelter materials and reconstruction support, stressing that without effective intervention, vulnerable populations will continue to suffer in the conflict-torn region.
