Gaza Chaos: 6 Killed at Aid Crossing

Israeli gunfire at Zikim Crossing sparks global outrage.

Israeli forces fatally shot six Palestinians and wounded over 140 at the Zikim Crossing in northern Gaza, where UN aid convoys enter, escalating tensions amid Israel’s plan to seize Gaza City, hospital officials reported Friday. Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiya, director of Shifa Hospital, confirmed the deaths were due to Israeli gunfire, with no immediate response from the Israeli military.

A Palestinian witness, speaking anonymously for safety, described desperate crowds, including some looters with knives, unloading aid trucks. Though less chaotic than previous incidents, with more trucks entering, Israeli troops fired on the crowd, the witness said. Since Israel eased a 2.5-month blockade in May, hundreds of Palestinians seeking aid have been killed, with witnesses and the UN human rights office attributing deaths to Israeli fire, while the military claims it uses only warning shots.

The incident follows Israel’s controversial plan to take over Gaza City, condemned by global leaders. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called it “wrong,” warning it endangers hostages held by Hamas and worsens Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, urging an immediate ceasefire. France’s foreign ministry slammed the plan as a “serious violation of international law,” undermining Palestinian statehood and regional stability. Iran’s Foreign Ministry labeled it a step toward “genocide,” urging Islamic nations to act.

The UN Security Council, prompted by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, will hold an emergency meeting Saturday at 3 pm EDT, backed by the UK, France, and others, though the U.S. did not support the request.
