Gandhi’s Ideals More Relevant Than Ever, Says German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in India
Merz joins PM Modi at Sabarmati Ashram, calls Gandhi’s teachings vital for modern world.
On his first official visit to India, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared on Monday that Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of freedom, dignity, and non-violence are needed more urgently now than at any other time. Accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Merz visited the iconic Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, where both leaders paid respectful homage to the Father of the Nation, underscoring the shared values that continue to bind India and Germany.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed Chancellor Merz at the ashram entrance. The two leaders offered floral tributes at Gandhi’s statue before entering ‘Hriday Kunj’, the simple quarters where Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi resided during pivotal years of the independence movement. Merz also observed the traditional spinning of khadi yarn on the charkha, the spinning wheel that Gandhi popularized as a symbol of self-reliance and economic resistance against colonial rule.
In the visitors’ book, Chancellor Merz wrote a heartfelt note: “Mahatma Gandhi’s unshakeable belief in the power of freedom and dignity of each and every individual inspires us to this day. This legacy unites Indians and Germans as friends in a world that may more than ever be in need of Gandhi’s teachings.” Founded by Gandhi in 1917, Sabarmati Ashram remained his home until 1930 and served as a key base for major satyagraha campaigns and the promotion of swadeshi principles.

Following the ashram visit, the leaders proceeded to the Sabarmati Riverfront, where Prime Minister Modi formally inaugurated the International Kite Festival-2026. Both dignitaries interacted with women artisans to learn about kite-making techniques, rode together in an open vehicle across the venue, and participated in kite flying, adding a festive touch to the diplomatic engagement.
The International Kite Festival-2026 features 135 expert kite flyers from 50 countries and nearly 1,000 Indian participants. The event, which continues until January 14 in Ahmedabad, coincides with Uttarayan (Makar Sankranti) and follows pre-festival showcases at Rajkot, Surat, Dholavira, and the Statue of Unity. Gujarat authorities project over five lakh visitors this year, surpassing last year’s figure of more than 3.83 lakh, as the festival promotes cultural heritage and key tourist attractions across the state.
