From Support To Streets: Imran Khan Backers Begin March In Pakistan
Supporters of Pakistan’s former PM begin a political march.
Thousands of supporters of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan began a long march towards Islamabad after talks between his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the federal government failed to resolve the dispute. The march began in Lakki Marwat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, with PTI supporters demanding Khan’s release. The demonstration had initially been planned for September 27 but was postponed to October 4.
PTI supporters gathered in large numbers, carrying the party’s red and green flags and displaying banners demanding Khan’s release. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi led the march from Lakki Marwat, while convoys from other parts of the province also attempted to join the movement. The PTI has planned a multi-day journey towards the capital, with supporters expected to join at different points along the route.
The protest followed unsuccessful negotiations between the federal government and PTI representatives. The two sides failed to reach an agreement on issues surrounding Khan’s detention and access to him, among other disagreements. The government has prepared additional security measures around Islamabad, while authorities have restricted access on some major routes in anticipation of the march.

Khan, a former cricket star who served as prime minister, has remained imprisoned since 2023 and faces multiple cases, including corruption-related charges. Khan and his party have rejected the allegations and described the cases as politically motivated. His supporters have also raised concerns about his access to medical care and family members, making his continued imprisonment a central issue for the PTI movement.
The march comes amid wider political and security pressures in Pakistan. Analysts cited in the original report said Khan remains a focal point for opposition to the government, while authorities are seeking to prevent the demonstrations from escalating. PTI leaders have indicated that the march will continue towards Islamabad, while the federal government has warned against attempts to enter restricted areas of the capital.
