Nagma Mallick appointed India’s next envoy to Japan, bringing decades of global diplomatic experience.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced the appointment of Nagma Mohamed Mallick, a 1991-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as India’s next Ambassador to Japan. Currently serving as Ambassador to the Republic of Poland, Mallick will soon assume her new role in Tokyo, succeeding Sibi George. Her appointment underscores India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Japan, a key strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

Mallick’s diplomatic career, spanning over three decades, is marked by exceptional service across diverse global postings. Beginning in Paris, she served at the Embassy of India to France and the Indian Mission to UNESCO, honing her expertise in multilateral diplomacy. In New Delhi, she held pivotal roles, including Desk Officer in the West Europe Division, a stint in the Prime Minister’s Office under I.K. Gujral, and a historic tenure as the first woman Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial), managing high-level state visits with finesse.

Her overseas assignments reflect a broad geopolitical canvas: First Secretary in Nepal, Counsellor in Sri Lanka, Deputy Chief of Mission in Thailand (2010–2012), Ambassador to Tunisia (2012–2015), and High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam (2015–2018). Within the Ministry of External Affairs, Mallick served as Deputy Spokesperson, Director of the Eurasia Division overseeing relations with Russia and CIS countries, Head of the Policy Planning Division, and Additional Secretary (Africa), driving India’s engagement with Eastern and Southern African nations.
