French School Shooting Leaves Headmaster And Teacher Injured, 14-Year-Old Arrested
Two school staff members were injured in Aubagne; their lives are not in danger.
A 14-year-old student was arrested in southern France on Monday after a headmaster and a teacher were injured in a shooting at a middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille. The incident took place at Joseph-Lakanal school, prompting an immediate response from school staff and law enforcement authorities. Police said a third person also sustained a minor injury after being grazed during the incident. The headmaster and teacher were reported to be out of life-threatening danger, according to local authorities.
The suspected student allegedly fired several shots inside the school before being subdued by a member of the staff. Police subsequently took the teenager into custody. Authorities have not established a motive for the incident, and the Marseille prosecutor’s office confirmed the arrest without immediately releasing further details about the investigation. Officials are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how the student gained access to the school with a firearm.
French Education Minister Edouard Geffray confirmed that a student from the school was suspected of carrying out the attack. In a public statement, he condemned the incident and called for collective action against violence in society. The offices of the French prime minister also announced that the interior and education ministers were travelling to the area following the shooting. Their visit was expected to allow officials to assess the situation and coordinate the government’s response.

The incident occurred amid weeks of student protests at high schools across France, but police said there was no apparent connection between the shooting and the demonstrations. Authorities clarified that Joseph-Lakanal middle school had not been affected by the protest movement. Investigators have not publicly identified a motive, and officials have cautioned against linking the incident to the wider unrest without supporting evidence.
The shooting has renewed attention to safety concerns in French educational institutions. School staff and emergency responders acted to bring the situation under control, while authorities began investigating the circumstances of the attack. The condition of the injured staff members was not considered life-threatening, and no other students were reported injured. Further details about the suspect, possible charges and the motive are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
