France Records 30% Surge in Deaths Amid Europe's Record Heatwave

France records 30% rise in deaths during Europe's record heatwave.

The number of deaths recorded in France rose by nearly 30 per cent during a week of record-breaking heat, as an intense heatwave continued to affect large parts of Europe. Public Health France reported a sharp increase in mortality during the week from June 22 to June 28, when the country experienced some of the highest temperatures ever recorded.

According to the national health agency, deaths increased by 29.1 per cent compared with the previous week, representing 2,025 additional fatalities. The latest figures highlight the growing health impact of the prolonged extreme weather, which has placed vulnerable groups, including elderly people and those with existing health conditions, at greater risk.

The updated figures are more than double an earlier preliminary estimate of at least 1,000 additional deaths released by authorities the previous Sunday. That initial assessment covered only three of the hottest days during the extreme weather. The broader weekly data has now revealed a significantly larger increase in deaths during the period.

The week from June 22 to June 28 was the hottest since the heatwave began last month, with France experiencing unprecedented daytime and night-time temperatures. Several cities and towns broke previous temperature records, while extreme conditions persisted for days without sufficient overnight cooling, increasing the health risks associated with prolonged heat exposure.

Hundreds of temperature records have also been broken across other parts of Europe as the heatwave spreads across the continent. The extreme conditions have raised concerns about public health, particularly in densely populated urban areas where buildings and roads can retain heat overnight. Authorities have continued to monitor the impact as high temperatures place additional pressure on health and emergency services.

Public Health France has warned that the number of heat-related deaths could rise further as more complete mortality data becomes available in the coming days. The latest figures underline the serious consequences of prolonged extreme temperatures and the importance of public health precautions during heatwaves. Authorities continue to assess the full impact of one of Europe’s most severe periods of extreme heat.
