Former US Official Joe Kent Flags Risk Of Israel Disrupting US-Iran Ceasefire
Kent warns Israeli actions could derail ceasefire and escalate tensions.
Former US counterterrorism official Joe Kent has warned that the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran could be undermined, cautioning that Israeli actions may risk “sabotaging” the agreement at a critical moment.
Kent’s remarks come as a two-week, conditional ceasefire holds between Washington and Tehran, brokered at the last minute to avoid a wider regional war. While the deal has temporarily halted direct escalation, tensions remain high—particularly involving Israel’s parallel military operations in the region.
According to Kent, the biggest concern is that continued or expanded Israeli military activity—especially outside the strict scope of the ceasefire—could derail ongoing diplomatic efforts. He has argued that further escalation by regional actors is “the last thing” needed while negotiations are underway, urging restraint to preserve the narrow window for talks.

His warning reflects a broader pattern in his recent statements. Kent, who resigned earlier over the Iran conflict, has repeatedly claimed that Israel played a significant role in pushing the United States toward confrontation with Iran and continues to influence the trajectory of the crisis.
The situation on the ground underscores these concerns. While Israel has expressed support for the temporary pause in US-Iran hostilities, it has also indicated that the ceasefire does not extend to all theatres, particularly Lebanon, where fighting linked to Iran-backed groups continues. This creates a complex environment where localized conflicts could quickly spiral into broader escalation.
Kent’s comments highlight a central risk facing the ceasefire: it is not a comprehensive peace agreement, but a limited and fragile arrangement dependent on multiple actors exercising restraint. With negotiations expected to continue in the coming days, any unilateral military action—whether by Israel, Iran, or allied groups—could collapse the truce and reignite full-scale conflict.
