Flydubai Jet Survives Dramatic 16,000-Foot Plunge, Astonishing Aviation Experts Worldwide
Flydubai Plane Survives 16,000-Foot Plunge
Aviation experts have expressed astonishment that a flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 survived an extreme mid-air descent and was able to land safely in Saudi Arabia after a violent cockpit confrontation between the pilots. Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, plunged from about 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in roughly a minute on Wednesday, according to flight-tracking data. Reuters reported that the aircraft descended nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds at one stage of the incident. The plane eventually diverted to Tabuk, where it made an emergency landing after passengers and crew intervened during the cockpit struggle.
The incident began when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, during the flight. Israeli officials said the co-pilot stabbed the captain and attempted to take control of the aircraft, triggering the rapid descent. Machchhar, despite being seriously injured, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and restrain the attacker. A second team of flydubai pilots who were travelling on the aircraft then helped regain control and land the plane safely in Tabuk. The co-pilot was arrested by Saudi authorities, while the motive for the attack remains under investigation.
The severity of the descent has drawn particular attention from aviation specialists because of the damage reportedly sustained by the aircraft. The Associated Press reported that experts were surprised the aircraft survived after most of its rudder was ripped from the tail during the extreme manoeuvre. The rudder is an important flight-control surface used primarily to control an aircraft’s yaw, or movement around its vertical axis. Damage to such a component can make an aircraft more difficult to control, particularly during an emergency. Despite the reported damage and the dramatic loss of altitude, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 remained airborne and was ultimately brought under control by the pilots.

Flight-tracking information showed just how quickly the aircraft lost altitude. The plane was cruising at approximately 33,000 feet before descending to around 17,000 feet in about a minute. Reuters reported that the sharpest portion of the descent involved a loss of nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. Passengers described experiencing what felt like extreme turbulence and repeated drops as the aircraft descended. One passenger told Reuters that the plane appeared to fall for roughly 20 to 30 seconds before stabilising and then descending again. The aircraft later flew toward the area near the Jordanian border before continuing to Tabuk for the emergency landing.
Passengers and crew played a crucial role in preventing the situation from becoming a catastrophe. According to accounts cited by Reuters and AP, people at the front of the cabin forced their way into the cockpit after the captain managed to open the door. They confronted and restrained the co-pilot while the aircraft was still in distress. A passenger briefly attempted to help with the aircraft controls before other trained crew members took over. The presence of additional flydubai pilots on board proved important, as they were able to assist in regaining control and safely completing the emergency landing. Israeli officials later praised the passengers and crew for their actions during the incident.
The incident is now being investigated by authorities in the countries involved, while flydubai has cautioned against speculation about what triggered the confrontation. Captain Machchhar was taken to hospital in Tabuk and was reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical treatment. The passengers were later flown to Israel on another aircraft. The extraordinary descent has prompted questions about the aircraft’s ability to withstand the sudden loss of altitude and reported rudder damage, but investigators will ultimately have to establish the precise sequence of events, the extent of the aircraft damage and how the flight remained controllable. For now, aviation experts’ surprise centres on the fact that the aircraft survived an exceptionally rapid descent and reached the ground safely despite the severe circumstances.
