Floods, Landslides and Thunderstorms Kill 17 in Afghanistan, Destroying Homes and 80km of Roads

At least 17 people have been killed and 26 injured after extreme weather conditions struck parts of Afghanistan over the past 24 hours. The disasters, which included severe flooding, landslides, and thunderstorms, have added to the growing toll of weather-related incidents in the region this season. Authorities warned that the casualty figures could rise as rescue and assessment operations continue. The situation remains critical in several affected areas. Emergency teams are working to reach remote regions. The scale of destruction has raised fresh concerns about climate vulnerability.

According to officials from the National Disaster Management Authority, at least 13 out of the country’s 34 provinces have been impacted. The worst-hit regions are located in the western, central, and northwestern parts of the country. Spokesperson Yousuf Hammad stated that assessment teams are still surveying the damage. Many areas remain difficult to access due to disrupted infrastructure. Authorities are coordinating relief efforts on the ground. The full extent of the disaster is yet to be determined.

The extreme weather has caused widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure. Around 147 houses have been either completely or partially destroyed. In addition, nearly 80 kilometres of roads have been wiped out, severely affecting connectivity. The damage has hampered rescue operations and delayed aid delivery. Several communities have been left isolated due to road destruction. Efforts are underway to restore basic access routes. The loss of infrastructure has compounded the humanitarian crisis.
