Five Dead In Gaza After Israeli Strikes Mark October 7 Anniversary Amid Continuing Conflict
Five killed as Israel strikes Gaza again
Israel carried out fresh strikes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday as the country marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks, with Palestinian officials reporting that at least five people were killed. The strikes came as families of those killed in the attacks gathered at the Nova music festival site in southern Israel at dawn to commemorate the victims. Loud explosions from across the border in Gaza were reportedly audible from the site as relatives and survivors assembled to remember more than 300 people who were killed at the festival during the assault three years ago. The anniversary ceremonies brought renewed focus to the events that triggered the prolonged conflict and the continuing violence in Gaza.
The October 7 attack marked the beginning of the current war between Israel and Hamas. Hamas-led militants crossed into southern Israel, attacking communities, military positions and the Nova music festival, killing around 1,200 people and taking hostages, according to Israeli authorities. Israel responded with a large-scale military campaign in the Gaza Strip, aimed at dismantling Hamas and securing the release of hostages. The conflict has since caused widespread destruction across Gaza and resulted in a large number of Palestinian deaths. As Israel observed the anniversary, commemorations were held across the country, with families continuing to remember relatives and friends killed in the attacks and demanding answers over the events surrounding the assault.
In Gaza City, Al-Shifa Hospital reported that two people were killed in an Israeli strike overnight. Gaza's Civil Defence agency identified one of the victims as Mohamed Tamous and said he was a volunteer with the organisation. The agency operates as an emergency rescue service in the Gaza Strip and responds to casualties and damage caused by Israeli military operations. The reported deaths came as Israeli forces continued operations in different parts of the territory. Palestinian officials have repeatedly said that civilians and emergency workers have been among those killed during the conflict, while Israel maintains that its military operations are aimed at Hamas and other armed groups rather than the civilian population.

The Israeli military said it had struck and killed two Hamas members who had emerged from Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. In a statement, the military said one of the individuals had planted explosives near the area of the Yellow Line with the intention of harming Israeli troops. The military described the two men as Hamas terrorists and said the operation was carried out because of the threat they posed to Israeli forces. Israel has previously accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and other public facilities, for military purposes, an allegation Hamas has repeatedly denied. The latest Israeli account could not be independently verified, and the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths remained unclear.
The strikes occurred against the backdrop of solemn commemorations in Israel marking three years since the October 7 attacks. At the Nova festival site, families gathered before sunrise to mourn those killed at the outdoor music event. More than 300 revellers were killed there during the attack, making the location one of the most prominent symbols of the violence that began the war. For relatives of those killed, the anniversary provided an opportunity to return to the site and remember the victims. The commemoration also highlighted the enduring trauma caused by the attacks, while the sounds of fighting from Gaza served as a reminder that the conflict's consequences remain unresolved.
The latest deaths and strikes illustrate the continuing volatility along the Israel-Gaza front even as the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks was being observed. Palestinian authorities continue to report casualties from Israeli military operations, while Israel says its forces are targeting Hamas members and preventing attacks against Israeli troops. Independent verification of battlefield claims remains difficult because of restrictions on access and the security situation inside Gaza. The conflict has also produced a severe humanitarian crisis, with extensive damage to homes and civilian infrastructure and large-scale displacement of Gaza's population. Three years after the October 7 attacks, the anniversary ceremonies in Israel and renewed violence in Gaza underscored the continuing human cost of the conflict and the unresolved security and political issues at its centre.
