A badminton hall built for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games has been severely damaged after a fire caused major destruction to the structure, including the collapse of its roof. The blaze broke out late on Sunday inside the unused facility, with firefighters working through the night to bring the flames under control by early Monday.
The fire department deployed nearly 40 firefighters and 13 vehicles to tackle the incident at the Olympic-era venue. Authorities said no injuries were reported, and the fire was eventually contained after several hours of emergency response efforts. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
The badminton hall, located inside a park that is popular among local residents, had remained unused for several years before the incident. The venue was originally constructed as a temporary facility for the 2004 Athens Olympics and later became part of the city’s wider debate over the future of Olympic infrastructure.

The construction of the complex cost more than 20 million euros, while an additional investment of around 16 million euros was made when it was leased as a private concert venue after the Games. During that period, the hall hosted major productions including Cats, Mamma Mia! and Jesus Christ Superstar.
The venue’s future had already faced legal and administrative challenges. In 2012, Greece’s highest administrative court ruled that the structure violated building regulations and should be demolished. The city of Athens said the facility’s 20-year lease had expired in April, leaving its long-term status uncertain.
The fire adds to concerns surrounding several Olympic venues that have struggled with maintenance and redevelopment challenges years after the Games. Authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage and determine the next steps for the badly affected structure.
