FDNY Responds To Inwood Apartment Fire That Killed Three And Injured Over 12

A major Inwood apartment fire in Manhattan killed three people and injured over a dozen in an overnight blaze.

A major fire at an apartment complex in the Inwood neighbourhood of Manhattan has left three people dead and more than a dozen injured, in what officials described as a “serious” early morning blaze. The fire broke out at a six-story walk-up building on Dyckman Street between Broadway and Vermilyea Avenue, sending shockwaves through the residential area and forcing a large-scale emergency response.

According to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), emergency services received the first call at approximately 12:30 a.m. reporting a fire on the second floor of the building. The incident escalated to a three-alarm response as flames quickly spread within the structure. More than 190 fire and emergency medical personnel were deployed to the scene, where firefighters were seen forcing entry into apartments, breaking windows, and working urgently to contain the blaze.

Authorities confirmed that 14 people were treated by emergency medical teams, including one firefighter who sustained minor injuries during the operation. Five individuals were transported to nearby hospitals in critical condition. Fire officials confirmed that three residents died as a result of the fire. FDNY officials described the incident as one of significant severity due to the speed of the fire’s spread and the number of people affected.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as alarms rang out and residents rushed to escape the burning building. One resident, Rita Vega, said she was awakened by the fire alarm and the sound of people screaming. “Everyone’s scared to come down… but we came down and told our neighbours to get out,” she said, adding that the situation felt overwhelming even from lower floors as panic spread quickly through the building.

Emergency officials said around 100 residents have been displaced due to damage caused by the fire. The American Red Cross has stepped in to assist affected families, providing temporary shelter and support, including the use of an MTA bus as a makeshift relief centre. Fire officials also reiterated the importance of safety measures during such incidents, noting that apartments with closed doors experienced significantly less fire damage compared to those where doors were left open.
