FCC Issues Order On ABC Licenses Following Jimmy Kimmel’s Remarks About Melania Trump

US administration escalates dispute with ABC after Kimmel’s remarks on Melania Trump trigger political backlash.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has initiated a move that could challenge the broadcast licenses of stations owned by ABC, escalating a political and media controversy that follows remarks made by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel about First Lady Melania Trump. The development has intensified tensions between the Trump administration, media organisations, and entertainment figures.

According to an FCC order published on Tuesday (local time), ABC has been directed to submit license renewals for all its licensed television stations by May 28, 2026. The order has been described as part of an ongoing regulatory review involving ABC’s corporate parent, Disney, including scrutiny of its diversity initiatives. However, media reports, including from CNN, have characterised the move as an “extraordinary escalation,” suggesting it may be perceived as broader governmental pressure following Kimmel’s controversial commentary.

The controversy intensified after Melania Trump posted on social media platform X, criticising Kimmel’s monologue. She described his remarks as “corrosive” and argued that they contributed to political tensions in the country. She also called on ABC’s leadership to take action, questioning how long the network would continue to support the comedian’s on-air comments.

Separately, former U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on Truth Social, linking Kimmel’s comments to a recent shooting incident outside a political event in Washington. He accused the comedian of making a “call to violence” and stated that Kimmel should be removed from his position immediately, further amplifying the political dimension of the dispute.

In response, Kimmel addressed the controversy during his show, describing his earlier comment about Melania Trump as a “light roast” focused on the age difference between her and Donald Trump. He defended the remarks as comedy rather than political commentary, while continuing to perform his regular monologue on air. Disney reportedly continued airing the program amid the backlash.

The situation also recalls earlier tensions involving “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, which was briefly suspended last year following separate controversies involving comments about political figures. The latest developments highlight ongoing friction between entertainment media, regulatory authorities, and political leadership, with the FCC’s licensing directive now adding a legal and institutional dimension to the dispute.
