'Fantastic Beasts' Cinematographer Stable After Himachal Paragliding Accident, Rescued by Air Force

Air Force rescue saves injured cinematographer after paragliding mishap.

Acclaimed British Cinematographer George Richmond, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is in stable condition after sustaining injuries in a paragliding accident in Himachal Pradesh. The 54-year-old cinematographer was rescued in a coordinated operation involving local authorities and the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The accident occurred on June 8 during a long-distance cross-country paragliding expedition in Kullu district. Richmond was part of a group of five paragliders flying from Bir Billing in Kangra district to the Deo Tibba region, a challenging route popular among experienced adventure sports enthusiasts. During the flight, he reportedly crashed into rugged mountainous terrain, suffering injuries that required immediate medical attention.

Following the accident, the four other members of the expedition alerted local authorities, prompting a search-and-rescue mission. Given the difficult terrain and remote location of the crash site, multiple agencies coordinated efforts to locate and evacuate Richmond as quickly as possible. Rescue teams eventually reached the area and moved him to a safer location for further evacuation.

The Indian Air Force played a crucial role in the operation by deploying a helicopter to airlift Richmond from the mountainous region. He was flown to Kullu, where he received initial treatment and medical assessment. Officials said the swift response helped ensure that he received urgent care despite the logistical challenges posed by the terrain.

After receiving preliminary treatment in Kullu, Richmond was referred on June 9 to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh for specialized care. Doctors performed surgery to treat his injuries, and hospital sources indicated that his condition has since stabilized. He remains under medical supervision as he continues his recovery.

The incident has drawn attention within both the film industry and the adventure sports community. Richmond has built a distinguished career as a cinematographer, contributing to several major international productions. His work on blockbuster films has earned recognition for its visual style and technical excellence, making him one of the more prominent cinematographers working in global cinema today.

The accident also underscores the risks associated with high-altitude adventure sports in Himachal Pradesh, which attracts paragliding enthusiasts from around the world. Authorities continue to stress the importance of strict safety protocols and preparedness while undertaking long-distance flights in mountainous regions. Meanwhile, Richmond’s successful rescue and stable condition have been welcomed by colleagues, fans, and well-wishers across the film industry.
