Families Await Justice as SC Considers TVK’s Karur Stampede Plea Today

The Supreme Court of India is set to pronounce its orders at 10:30 AM today on petitions by actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party seeking an independent investigation into the deadly stampede at a rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur district last month. The tragedy, which claimed at least 40 lives and injured several others on September 28, has sparked a blame game between political outfits and raised questions about crowd management at public events. TVK's plea challenges a Madras High Court directive forming a special investigation team (SIT) led by state police officers, arguing it lacks impartiality.

TVK, a nascent political outfit launched by Vijay—known for blockbuster Tamil films like Master and Leo—approached the apex court on Wednesday through its secretary, Aadhav Arjuna. The party demands a probe supervised by a retired Supreme Court judge, citing potential bias in the state-led SIT and alleging a possible "pre-planned conspiracy" by miscreants. This comes alongside a similar petition by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Uma Anandan for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, both listed before Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai. The high court's SIT was constituted shortly after the incident to probe lapses, but TVK contends it fails to inspire public confidence amid political sensitivities in Tamil Nadu.

The stampede occurred during Vijay's rally in Karur, where the actor-turned-politician was set to address supporters ahead of TVK's formal launch. An FIR at Karur town police station named TVK's district secretary Madhiazhagan, general secretary Bussy Anand, and joint general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for culpable homicide, attempt to commit culpable homicide, and endangering lives.

Police investigations ruled out intelligence failures, attributing the chaos to Vijay's late arrival after hours of waiting, insistence on parking the campaign bus closer than advised (despite requests to stop 50 metres away), and inadequate facilities like drinking water for an unexpectedly large crowd. TVK had permission for 10,000 attendees, but estimates suggest up to 25,000 gathered, overwhelming security arrangements.

The incident has ignited broader debates on event safety protocols in India's vibrant political landscape, where star power often draws massive turnouts. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Families of the victims continue to seek justice, with compensation announcements offering little solace amid grief.
