Fact Check: Viral 'Trump Body Double' Video Actually Shows Melania's Father

A video circulating on social media claiming to show US President Donald Trump’s alleged “body double” has been debunked, with the man seen in the footage identified as Viktor Knavs, the father of First Lady Melania Trump. The clip shows Trump speaking to members of the media at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after the World Cup final, while a man resembling him walks in the background. The apparent resemblance prompted users on X to speculate that Trump’s supposed stand-in had been caught on camera.

The video was widely shared with claims that the man in the background was a “backup Trump” or a stunt double. One social media account posted that people were reacting to the alleged discovery and asked whether the person looked like a clone of the president. Another post similarly suggested that the individual captured in the footage could be Trump’s stunt double, helping the claim spread across social media platforms.

However, fact-checking information identified the man as Viktor Knavs, Melania Trump’s father and Donald Trump’s father-in-law. A community note attached to one of the posts also clarified that the person seen in the video was not Trump’s body double but Knavs. The clarification was supported by images showing that Knavs had attended the World Cup final alongside Melania and President Trump.

The resemblance gained additional attention after comedian Jon Stewart discussed the footage on an episode of The Daily Show. In a July 20 broadcast, Stewart zoomed in on the man wearing a blue tie as he moved behind Trump and jokingly questioned whether the footage showed a “backup Trump.” His comments added to the humorous speculation surrounding the clip, which was subsequently recirculated online with claims presenting the resemblance as evidence of a body double.

Further visual evidence showed that Knavs was wearing the same suit and blue tie in a photograph posted by Melania Trump’s official Instagram account. The image showed Melania with her father and FIFA president Gianni Infantino while attending the World Cup final. The matching clothing and the context of Knavs’ attendance at the event helped establish that the man in the viral footage was Trump’s father-in-law.

Knavs and Donald Trump are also close in age, which may have contributed to the confusion among viewers watching the video. Melania’s father is reportedly only two years older than the US president. Despite the online speculation, the available evidence identifies the man as Viktor Knavs, and the viral video does not show Donald Trump’s body double or a cloned version of the president.
