Europe-Iran Nuclear Talks Scheduled Ahead of Deadline
Iran engages Europe to avoid UN sanctions snapback.
As a critical European deadline looms, Iran announced that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will hold a telephone conference with his British, French, and German counterparts, alongside the European Union’s chief diplomat, to address escalating tensions over its nuclear program. The call, reported by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, comes just nine days before an August 31 deadline set by the three European nations—parties to the 2015 nuclear deal—to reimpose UN sanctions via the “snapback” mechanism if Iran fails to resolve concerns about its nuclear activities.
The urgency stems from Iran’s near-weapons-grade uranium enrichment, which reached 60% purity before its atomic sites were bombed during the 12-day Iran-Israel war in June 2025. Following the conflict, Iran severed ties with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), leaving the global community with limited insight into its nuclear stockpile and activities. While Iran insists its program is peaceful, its enrichment levels—unmatched by any non-nuclear-armed nation—raise alarms, with the US and IAEA noting Iran’s nuclear weapons program until 2003.
On August 8, France, Germany, and the UK warned Iran of “snapback” sanctions unless a “satisfactory solution” is reached. The mechanism, set to expire in October 2025, allows any deal signatory to reinstate sanctions for noncompliance, though post-expiration efforts could face vetoes from China or Russia. Iran’s refusal to cooperate with the IAEA, coupled with threats to arrest its director-general, Rafael Grossi, complicates negotiations. Iran baselessly blames the IAEA for the June war, further straining ties.

The talks aim to restore IAEA oversight, a cornerstone of the 2015 accord, which granted the agency robust monitoring capabilities.
