EU Condemns Israeli Strikes in Lebanon, Urges Respect for Ceasefire with Hezbollah
EU condemns Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, demands full respect for 2024 ceasefire with Hezbollah.
The European Union on Saturday strongly condemned Israeli strikes conducted in southern Lebanon, urging Israel to respect the ceasefire agreement signed a year ago with Hezbollah. The attacks, which took place on November 6, were claimed by Israel to target the Iran-backed militant group accused of rearming in violation of the ceasefire.
In a statement, EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni emphasized the importance of upholding United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire reached in November 2024. “We call on Israel to cease all actions that violate the ceasefire agreement,” he said, while also urging all Lebanese actors, especially Hezbollah, to avoid any responses that could escalate tensions further.
The Israeli military had warned residents of four villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate buildings ahead of the strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure. The Lebanese army criticized Israel, accusing it of attempting to destabilize Lebanon and hinder the Lebanese army’s ongoing deployment aligned with the ceasefire.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Iran have also condemned the strikes, with Iran labeling them “savage” and appealing to the international community to intervene. Though Lebanon and Israel remain technically at war, recent clashes have mainly involved Hezbollah rather than the Lebanese military. The militant group, supported by Iran, refuses to disarm, citing its role in resisting Israeli occupation and defending Lebanon.
The renewed hostilities underscore the fragile peace in southern Lebanon and the broader regional tensions involving Israel, Hezbollah, and their backers. The EU’s call for restraint reflects growing concerns over the risk of further conflict escalation in an already volatile region.
