Energy Security Alert: Ras Laffan Attack Clouds India’s Long-Term Gas Supply from Qatar

Ras Laffan attack may disrupt LNG supply to India.

Iran's missile attack on Qatar's vital Ras Laffan energy complex, threatens India's energy security as the world's largest LNG importer heavily relies on Qatari supplies amid escalating Middle East conflict. QatarEnergy confirmed significant damage and fires at the facility—home to the globe's biggest LNG production and export hub—suspending output without casualties. The retaliation for prior US-Israel strikes on Iranian infrastructure has halted shipments from seven of Qatar's 14 LNG trains, directly impacting contracts supplying nearly 20% of India's annual gas needs.

India imports around 8 million tonnes of LNG yearly from Qatar under long-term deals with Petronet LNG and GAIL, filling 25% of its 125 million tonne import demand. Disruptions exacerbate shortages from the Strait of Hormuz blockade, forcing reliance on costlier spot cargoes and domestic production cuts. Power plants and fertilizer units face gas curtailments, risking blackouts during peak summer demand.

Global LNG prices surged 15% overnight to $18/MMBtu, compounding India's $20 billion annual energy bill already strained by Hormuz closure. Qatar's neutral stance in the Iran-US-Israel war made Ras Laffan a perceived safe hub; its vulnerability now signals risks to all Gulf exporters, delaying India's green transition goals.

Alternative suppliers like the US and Australia cannot fully bridge gaps due to logistics and pricing, while spot market competition from Europe and Japan intensifies. New Delhi has activated strategic reserves and urged efficiency measures, but prolonged outages could shave 0.5% off GDP growth.

Qatar's swift damage assessments and diplomatic condemnations aim to restore flows, yet Iranian threats against regional hubs heighten fears of cascading shutdowns. For energy-starved India, the assault underscores overdependence on volatile Gulf supplies, accelerating diversification pleas despite limited options.
