Energy Minister Confirms Disruptions in Bangladesh Fuel Supply Due to Increased Demand

Bangladesh fuel supply disrupted as demand rises; minister urges citizens to avoid panic buying.

Bangladesh is facing disruptions in fuel supply as rising consumer demand is outpacing distribution, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud confirmed on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka, he said petrol at pumps is being exhausted faster than usual, creating temporary shortages despite no overall supply deficit.

Mahmud explained that previously, tank lorries filled in the morning would leave some fuel surplus by day’s end. “But now, due to long queues, the fuel runs out quickly,” he said, highlighting how spikes in demand are straining the existing supply system. The minister added that early-hour supply delays contribute to the perception of shortage, as it takes time to refill tankers from depots and transport fuel to pumps.

The minister noted that the volume of fuel sold in a day is now being exhausted within just a few hours, and the high number of consumers crowding petrol stations has put additional pressure on distribution. He urged citizens not to purchase fuel in excessive quantities, warning that bulk buying further disrupts availability.

When asked about the possibility of fuel rationing, Mahmud did not provide a definitive response, stating, “I cannot say anything about that right now.” He emphasised that careful management of personal fuel use could help alleviate the situation.

Meanwhile, commuters in Khulna city reported difficulties in obtaining fuel at several filling stations. Palash Das, a resident of Dashpara in the Boyra area, said he visited four stations without being able to refuel his motorcycle, illustrating the local impact of the supply strain.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, with the minister assuring that fuel becomes available later in the day as tankers are replenished, but advising patience and responsible consumption amid the temporary disruptions.
