Elon Musk's X Expands Into Banking As Platform Pushes Toward 'Everything App' Vision
X adds banking features in everything app push
Social media platform X has expanded access to its X Money banking service, allowing all US subscribers of its paid Premium and Premium+ plans to use the financial feature as part of Elon Musk's broader vision to transform the platform into an "everything app." The rollout marks another step in X's efforts to move beyond social networking and provide users with a wider range of digital services within a single platform. The company began offering X Money to all eligible Premium and Premium+ subscribers in the United States on Monday after initially launching the service as a limited test for a smaller group of high-tier subscribers in late June.
The expansion gives more users access to financial tools directly integrated into the X application, reducing the need to rely on separate banking platforms for everyday transactions. X Money allows users to manage several financial activities, including holding deposits, sending peer-to-peer payments, paying bills, transferring money through wire services and mailing checks. The feature is designed to make X a more comprehensive digital ecosystem where users can communicate, conduct business and handle financial transactions without leaving the app.
The introduction of banking services is a key part of Musk's long-term ambition to turn X into an "everything app" — a platform that combines social media, payments, commerce and other digital services in one place. Similar concepts have been developed by major technology platforms in other markets, particularly in Asia, where apps have integrated messaging, payments, shopping and financial services into unified ecosystems. X Money's financial infrastructure is supported through partnerships with established banking institutions.

User deposits under the service are held at Cross River Bank, a New Jersey-based financial institution that provides banking services for several financial technology companies. Deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) up to $250,000, providing a layer of protection for eligible customer funds. The expansion of X Money comes as Musk continues efforts to reshape the platform following his acquisition of Twitter in 2022 and its subsequent rebranding as X.
Since taking control, Musk has repeatedly stated his goal of creating a platform that offers a wide range of services, including financial transactions, similar to China's WeChat model. However, expanding into financial services also brings additional regulatory and operational challenges. Companies offering banking-related products must comply with financial regulations, maintain security standards and ensure customer data and funds are protected.
X's partnership with established financial institutions is expected to help address some of these requirements as it scales the service. The company has not announced a timeline for expanding X Money beyond the United States, though the launch signals a significant move toward integrating financial services into the platform. If successfully expanded, the service could become a major component of Musk's strategy to increase user engagement and make X a central destination for both digital communication and financial activity.
