Eggs Hurled At Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh Following Arrest In RG Kar Case

Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was attacked by protesters outside Khardah Police Station in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Friday, shortly after his arrest in connection with allegations surrounding the hurried cremation of the RG Kar hospital rape-murder victim. The former legislator was being taken to a prison van when an agitated crowd surrounded him and allegedly assaulted him. According to reports, protesters hit and kicked Ghosh as security personnel attempted to escort him away from the police station. Despite the presence of a heavy police deployment and Rapid Action Force personnel, the crowd continued its protest and threw footwear, eggs and muck at the former MLA.

Police personnel placed a helmet over Ghosh's head to protect him from the objects being thrown by protesters. Ghosh was arrested over allegations that he used his political influence to facilitate the cremation of the RG Kar victim's body in haste and against the wishes of her family. The allegations relate to the handling of the victim's body following the August 2024 rape and murder at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a case that triggered widespread protests across West Bengal and the country. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the cremation and whether established procedures were followed.

The allegations against Ghosh centre on claims that he intervened in the process and used his influence to ensure that the cremation took place quickly. The former MLA's arrest has brought renewed attention to questions surrounding the events that followed the discovery of the victim's body. The RG Kar case became one of India's most prominent criminal cases in recent years after the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was found at the Kolkata hospital in August 2024.
