A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the southern Philippines on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), coming just a week after a deadly quake in the same region that killed at least 65 people. The latest tremor has once again raised concerns about seismic activity in an already vulnerable part of the country.
The quake was recorded at 5:18 pm local time (0918 GMT) and originated off the coast of Mindanao island. USGS data indicated that the earthquake struck at a depth of 112 kilometres (approximately 69.5 miles), classifying it as a deep-focus seismic event. Such earthquakes typically occur within subduction zones, where tectonic plates interact at significant depths beneath the Earth’s surface.
Authorities have not immediately reported casualties or major damage from the latest quake. However, given the region’s recent experience with a powerful earthquake that caused widespread destruction and loss of life, emergency response agencies remain on alert for possible aftershocks or secondary impacts.
