EAM S. Jaishankar Tells US Secretary Attacks on Indian Vessels in Gulf are Unjustified
India protests US Navy attacks in Gulf that killed three Indian seafarers on commercial vessels
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday conveyed India’s strong objection to recent attacks by the United States Navy on commercial vessels in the Gulf region that reportedly resulted in the deaths of three Indian seafarers. During a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jaishankar stated that such lethal actions against commercial shipping were unjustified and raised serious concerns regarding the safety of Indian nationals working aboard international merchant vessels.
The diplomatic intervention came amid growing tensions between New Delhi and Washington over the incidents in the Gulf of Oman. According to official sources, Jaishankar, who was on a bilateral visit to Finland, directly communicated India’s concerns to Rubio and emphasised the need for accountability and greater caution in military operations taking place near busy commercial shipping routes.
Earlier on Friday, India summoned the United States Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi for the second time within 48 hours and lodged what officials described as a “strong protest” against the attacks. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed concern over a series of actions involving US naval forces and sought detailed explanations regarding the circumstances that led to the deaths of Indian crew members aboard commercial vessels operating in the region.

The Gulf of Oman and surrounding maritime corridors are among the world’s most important trade routes, carrying substantial volumes of global energy supplies and commercial cargo. Thousands of Indian seafarers are employed on international merchant ships that regularly transit through these waters, making their safety a significant concern for Indian authorities whenever security incidents occur in the area.
The latest diplomatic exchange highlights the seriousness with which New Delhi is treating the issue despite its broader strategic partnership with Washington. India has consistently advocated for the protection of civilian shipping and adherence to international maritime norms, particularly in regions experiencing heightened military activity and geopolitical tensions.
While details regarding the specific incidents remain under examination, Indian officials are expected to continue engaging with their US counterparts to seek clarity and ensure measures are implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The matter is likely to remain a key point of discussion in bilateral diplomatic channels as investigations and consultations proceed.
