External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar arrived in France on Thursday to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with Partner Countries, marking India’s active engagement in high‑level global diplomacy. The two‑day meeting, being held at Abbaye des Vaux‑de‑Cernay near Paris, will bring together foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations and invited partners to discuss pressing international challenges.

Upon arrival, EAM Jaishankar was received warmly by French Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot, with whom he also held his first bilateral discussion on the sidelines of the event. Jaishankar shared his arrival on social media, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the gathering.

Organised at the invitation of France, the current holder of the G7 presidency, the meeting will deliberate on several key global issues. These include the ongoing war in Ukraine, efforts to de‑escalate the conflict in West Asia, reforms in global governance, and challenges relating to maritime security and energy supply routes. India’s participation underscores its role as a significant diplomatic partner in addressing these shared concerns.

Statements from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs indicate that discussions will aim to promote negotiations for de‑escalation in the Middle East, protect civilian security, and support the reopening of vital maritime and trade routes. The agenda also includes pressure on Russia regarding its actions in Ukraine and continued support for Kyiv’s energy and defence needs.

Beyond the core meeting, delegates are expected to take up broader regional concerns, covering issues such as the Indo‑Pacific security landscape, Sudan, Haiti, and economic integration in the Middle East. Collaborative efforts to counter drug trafficking and terrorist financing, including plans to establish a G7‑partner task force and regional security conferences, are also on the agenda.

EAM Jaishankar’s presence at the forum not only highlights India’s involvement in global strategic dialogues but also offers opportunities for bilateral engagement with counterparts on the sidelines of the meeting. The discussions are set against a backdrop of evolving geopolitical challenges, including sustained conflicts and shifting international alliances.
