Dutch FM Urges India-Netherlands to Intensify Ties in Defence and Technology
Dutch FM calls for stronger India-Netherlands ties in defence, security, and technology.
India and the Netherlands are stepping up bilateral cooperation as global geopolitics shift, with Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel highlighting the strong alignment between the two nations in values and vision. Speaking during his meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, van Weel stressed the importance of sticking together to uphold democracy, free trade, and the international rule-based order.
During his visit, van Weel expressed satisfaction over the signing of a Letter of Intent with India on security and defense collaboration. “In turbulent times, countries like ours must intensify cooperation to stand the test of time,” he said, adding that both nations are committed to working together in new technologies while maintaining democratic principles.
Van Weel also visited Dutch company NXP in India, which is eager to expand its collaboration. He highlighted that as technology becomes more integral to society, implementing it in ways that align with shared norms and democratic values is crucial. “Despite our geographical differences, psychologically and mentally, India and the Netherlands are very much aligned,” he noted.

The Dutch minister met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, emphasizing cooperation in defense and maritime security, particularly protecting open sea lanes in the Indo-Pacific region. He described this collaboration as vital for maintaining global security and stability in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
In addition to defense discussions, van Weel engaged with India’s Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs Chair Shashi Tharoor to explore how domestic debate influences foreign policy. He highlighted opportunities for collaboration and India’s growing role on the global stage, signaling a multi-dimensional approach to the bilateral relationship.
Van Weel also visited Maharashtra, meeting Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss regional cooperation in areas like maritime innovation, circular economy, water management, and agriculture. His visit included engagements with students, entrepreneurs, and social partners, underscoring the Netherlands’ commitment to strengthening people-to-people and economic ties with India.
