Donald Trump Attributes Lindsey Graham's Death To Rare Undetectable Condition In Fresh Statement

Trump links Graham's death to undetectable medical condition.

US President Donald Trump has questioned the preliminary findings surrounding the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, suggesting that the condition responsible for the South Carolina Republican's death was unrelated to blocked arteries. His remarks appeared to contradict the initial assessment released by the Washington, D.C. Medical Examiner, which identified an aortic dissection as the cause of death. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, Trump was asked about reports of FBI agents visiting Graham's residence following the senator's unexpected death over the weekend.

In response, the president said he initially believed Graham's death was linked to clogged arteries because the senator had previously experienced heart-related health issues. "At first, I heard it was clogged arteries because he did have clogged arteries. He had a problem with that... I wish he took better care of himself," Trump said. However, he went on to state that he had since been told the fatal condition was "a totally different thing," adding that it was unrelated to arterial blockages. Trump also suggested that the condition was similar to one that had claimed the life of Graham's father many years earlier.

An aortic dissection is a serious medical emergency that occurs when the inner layer of the aorta—the body's largest artery—tears, allowing blood to flow between the layers of the vessel wall. While the condition can be associated with longstanding high blood pressure and certain inherited connective tissue disorders, it is medically distinct from coronary artery disease, which involves blockages in the arteries supplying blood to the heart. The Washington, D.C. Medical Examiner's Office has not announced any change to its preliminary findings regarding Graham's death. Authorities have also not publicly linked the senator's death to blocked coronary arteries or any other medical condition beyond the reported aortic dissection.

Officials have likewise not commented in detail on the presence of FBI personnel at Graham's residence. Trump's remarks have drawn attention because they appear to differ from the information released by medical authorities. The president did not provide any evidence or identify the source of the information that led him to conclude Graham's death resulted from a condition unrelated to blocked arteries. His comments came as tributes continued to pour in from political leaders across the United States following the veteran senator's death. Lindsey Graham served as one of the Republican Party's most prominent lawmakers, representing South Carolina in the US Senate for more than two decades.

Known for his influence on foreign policy, defence and judicial matters, Graham was a close political ally of Trump during much of the latter's presidency and remained a key figure in Republican politics until his death. Medical experts note that while coronary artery disease and aortic dissection can both affect the cardiovascular system, they are separate conditions with different causes, risk factors and treatments. Any final determination regarding the senator's death is expected to depend on the completion of the medical examiner's investigation and official documentation. Until then, the preliminary finding remains that Lindsey Graham died from an aortic dissection, while Trump's comments have added a new dimension to public discussion surrounding the case.
