DHS Confirms Synagogue Ramming Suspect Held Lebanese Citizenship

A 41‑year‑old man who rammed his vehicle into the Temple Israel synagogue near Detroit before being shot dead by security personnel has been identified as a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon, federal officials said. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed his identity and immigration history as part of the ongoing investigation into the March 12 incident, which authorities are treating as a targeted act of violence against a Jewish institution.
Federal and local law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, who was born in Lebanon and later moved to the United States. According to DHS records, he entered the U.S. in 2011 on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen and was granted American citizenship in 2016. Details about his motives have not been publicly confirmed as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The violent incident occurred when Ghazali drove a vehicle through part of the synagogue building, which also houses a preschool and early childhood centre, and reportedly carried a rifle. Security personnel engaged him with gunfire, resulting in his death. The vehicle caught fire after the collision.

Although many worshippers, staff and children were inside the building at the time, emergency responders reported that no civilians were seriously injured. One security guard was struck by the vehicle, and dozens of law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation during the response. All approximately 140 preschoolers and other occupants were evacuated safely.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation and has described the episode as targeting the Jewish community, although a definitive motive has not been established. Federal and local agencies are examining available evidence, including social media activity and other leads, to determine what prompted the attack.
Community leaders and public officials have condemned the act of violence. The incident took place amid heightened concerns about threats against religious institutions in the United States, and authorities have urged vigilance while continuing their inquiry into how and why the attack unfolded.
