Delhi-NCR Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert as Roads Flood, Traffic Crawls

Heavy rain floods Delhi-NCR roads as IMD issues red alert warning.

Heavy overnight and morning rain lashed Delhi-NCR on Thursday, flooding roads and slowing traffic across several parts of the region. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for all districts of Delhi, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and intense rainfall over the next two to three hours as commuters faced widespread waterlogging.

Visuals from Faridabad’s Sector 55 showed a long stretch of road submerged under murky floodwater, with cars, an auto-rickshaw and other vehicles moving through knee-deep water. The heavy showers made travel difficult in several low-lying areas, while motorists were forced to drive cautiously through flooded roads as water levels continued to rise.

Waterlogging was also reported on Delhi’s Vikas Marg, where vehicles were seen moving slowly through flooded stretches outside closed market buildings early on Thursday morning. In Munirka, a car was captured navigating a badly waterlogged street at night, with the water reaching the lower part of the vehicle as heavy rain continued across the national capital.

Videos circulating online also showed severe flooding in covered and low-lying areas, with water flowing rapidly across floors and roads. Weather observers warned that similar accumulation could affect Noida, Ghaziabad and adjoining parts of western Uttar Pradesh through the day. The persistent rainfall disrupted normal movement across the wider National Capital Region and increased concerns over further waterlogging.

The India Meteorological Department issued a district-wise nowcast warning valid for the next two to three hours, placing all districts of Delhi under a red alert. The weather department warned of lightning and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching around 60 kmph and heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, advising residents to remain cautious during the intense weather spell.

Red alerts were also issued for Faridabad, Karnal, Palwal, Panchkula, Panipat, Sonipat and Yamunanagar in Haryana. With heavy rain expected to continue, commuters across Delhi-NCR were advised to prepare for traffic delays and avoid severely waterlogged routes where possible. Authorities and residents remained on alert as thunderstorms and intense showers continued to affect the capital and surrounding areas.
