Delhi CM Leads Cleanliness Drive, Warns Against Property Defacement

CM urges citizens and politicians to maintain city cleanliness during Sewa Pakhwada.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta spearheaded a cleanliness drive on Tuesday as part of the "Sewa Pakhwada" initiative marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birth anniversary, emphasizing zero tolerance for property defacement in the capital. While removing posters from a flyover pillar on Ring Road in her Shalimar Bagh constituency, Gupta issued a stern warning to political workers, particularly targeting those pasting posters bearing her image. “Defacement through wall writing or posters is a serious offense that dirties our city. No such acts will be tolerated,” she declared, urging politicians to refrain from such practices.

The cleanliness campaign, which saw participation from Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, and other BJP leaders and MLAs, focused on the 55-kilometer Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg). The PWD has divided the road into eight sections, each assigned an engineer to oversee cleaning and repair work over the next two weeks. The initiative, which covered 71 locations including flyovers and adjacent areas, aims to enhance the city’s aesthetic and functional appeal, according to a Delhi BJP statement. Sachdeva joined the drive near Rose Garden under the ITO flyover, underscoring the party’s commitment to a cleaner Delhi.

Gupta stressed that cleanliness is not a one-time effort but a continuous responsibility requiring collective action from residents, resident welfare associations (RWAs), and public representatives. “Everyone must contribute daily to keep Delhi clean,” she said, signaling that the campaign would extend beyond the Sewa Pakhwada period. The drive aligns with the BJP’s broader push for urban improvement in Delhi, where issues like littering and unauthorized posters have long plagued public spaces, drawing criticism from civic groups.

The initiative comes amid growing public demand for better civic management in the capital, which faces challenges like air pollution and urban clutter. With Delhi’s population exceeding 20 million, maintaining cleanliness remains a critical governance priority. The government’s proactive stance, coupled with high-level participation, aims to inspire civic responsibility while addressing the persistent issue of property defacement across the city.
